Yarra Valley vs Mornington Peninsula Wine Tour: Which Hop It Route Should You Choose?

This is the question we get asked more than almost any other, so let's actually answer it instead of saying "both are great".

Choosing between a Yarra Valley vs Mornington Peninsula wine tour comes down to three things: wine style, vibe, and how much ground you want to cover in a day.

The wine

Yarra Valley leans into variety and Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are the backbone, but you'll also find sparkling at Domaine Chandon, Italian-inspired drops at SOUMAH, and gin at Four Pillars for anyone skipping wine altogether. Mornington Peninsula is more tightly focused on cool-climate Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, with wineries like Ten Minutes By Tractor and Port Phillip Estate representing some of the most awarded examples in the country.

The vibe

Yarra Valley feels more like classic wine country with rolling vineyards, an hour from the city, dense with cellar doors close together. Mornington Peninsula trades some of that density for coastal views; several cellar doors (Port Phillip Estate especially) look out over the bay rather than just vines.

The distance and timing

Both are doable as a single Hop It day. Yarra Valley has a slightly larger concentration of stops on the Red and Green routes, so it suits people who want more options to choose between. Mornington's Orange Route rewards picking two or three stops properly rather than rushing four.
